NOT a bug – NOT an outdated acronym – A tribute to the women who flew planes long before Title IX protected girls’ rights to play sports!
GOAL:
Develop a unique and stand out visual identity for the new Professional Women's Hockey Team in Seattle that has a connection to the culture and history of Seattle.
HISTORY LESSON:
Seattle has a rich history in aviation with Boeing dating back to the early 1900s. Women played a large role in the company from the very beginning and were considered trailblazers in aviation. Boeing employed 30,000 women in 1944 and the iconic "Rosie the Riveter" motif was born.
Women Airforce Service Pilots -> W.A.S.P.
During WWII, the W.A.S.P.s were the first women to fly U.S. military aircraft. They were civilian pilots who trained other pilots and tested new aircraft. They flew many Boeing planes including the B17 Flying Fortress and B29 Superfortress.
EXPANDING ON THE BRAND:
The Seattle Wasp brand can harness iconic visual elements from the world of aviation to build a distinct and immersive brand: As graphic motifs or badges, integrated into motion graphics, transitions, or merch designs, or used in UI elements or printed visuals for a tactile, hands-on feel. Elements could include:
– Military Uniform Style Insignia
– Smoke Trails & Turbines
– Dashboard Dials & Cockpit Controls
– Runway Markings & Blueprints
– WASP Diamond
– Stencil Fonts
– WWII propoganda poster style
The Seattle Wasp brand is all about honoring the city’s aviation roots and the fearless women who helped shape it. With bold visuals and a strong potential for building on the brand identity, it brings something fresh and meaningful to the Seattle sports scene and to the PWHL.
